A Dysfunctional Myth: Pleading for aliens to help with the Gulf Gusher

I would like to introduce this post with Joseph Campbell, in conversation with Bill Moyers:

Joseph Campbell speaks of a “future myth” that will be spoken of in the “immediate future”. It appears that the myth is being gestated right now, assuming trial forms, or evolving in some way.

Never before have we have the knowledge or means to observe a myth being generated, and to participate in its generation. Unfortunately, the myth being generated these days is not the kind of myth that is likely to help us.

I was dismayed to read an article by Dr. Michael Salla about the Gulf Oil crisis, in relation to an online petition declaring human readiness for alien contact.  Current thinking in some circles goes something like this: Aliens will neither intervene, nor help humanity, without a prior request. Dr. Salla asks in his Examiner article “Should extraterrestrials stop the Gulf Leak?”

This current story about our helplessness and need for alien saviours is diagnostic of our collective immaturity. At best, it is an immature myth, a myth in the process of being formed through our collective efforts at understanding our place in an infinite Cosmos.

Quantum Entanglement and biological links to our Planet

A recent article from Popular Science describes research that suggests a quantum entanglement as a mechanism for bird navigation. Birds may actually “see” magnetic fields by virtue of the retinal compound cryptochrome.

If true, this would highlight the profound linkages possible between life forms and the planet itself. Indeed, another BBC item makes a connection between the first appearance of Earth’s magnetic field and the appearance of Life.

There has long been speculation that our dominant brainwave frequency’s match with the Schumann Resonance is no coincidence, and that our brains are wired to Earth’s in some deep way, and that environmental magnetic fields are critical to biological systems. You can read more about this linkage at Earth Breathing.

The notion of Earth as Gaia, intimately inseparable from ourselves, as we resonate with the magnetic field, is a grand concept, capable of organising other concepts that promote much needed change.

What has this got to do with Extraterrestrial Intelligence? EVERYTHING! As we learn who we are, really, beyond our tiny concepts, alliances and conditioned identities, we might just get to the point of being attuned enough to ourselves and our environment that we take proper notice of the situation, and start to act like an autonomous and deeply connected Earthling. As we drop layers of conditioned identities and reactivity, emotionalism and pathological detachment, we become more subtly attuned to finer aspects of Reality, and perhaps thereby start to become truly ready for Contact.

Why we need a new paradigm that places Earth First

Here is an item from today’s BBC News. It describes the “profound” loss of fish stocks. This is not just eco-news, but critical information about the state of our Planet. Exosystems ARE planet Earth, for all intents and purposes. If we can learn to feel for our planet, we might get more involved, speak out, vote more carefully, and so on. Just repeating this BBC item is not much, but it is all I can think of doing at this moment.

What has this got to do with Extraterrestrial Intelligence? EVERYTHING! Thinking about ET might just give us the mental jolt to wake up and start contributing to Terrestrial Intelligence. Put yourself in the position of an observing visitor: what would you say to Earthlings?

Tek-Gnostics: A Sign of the Times

The UFO phenomenon and the Cosmic Perspective has fuelled an entire culture of expressions that embody, one way or another, the idea that we are not alone, that Reality is multi-dimensional, and that technology can somehow be reconciled with mysticism.

Increased awareness of quantum physics, Eastern thought and depth psychology, and the widespread use of psychedelics seem to have combined and conspired together in this age of high technology to give rise to fusions and expressions of all sorts. Interestingly, all these disciplines have something to contribute to the analysis and understanding of the UFO phenomenon.

Check out Tek-Gnostics. You will find a very interesting and well laid out website laden with information and inspiration.

The resident sensei appears to share many core values with myself: honouring humour, breaking down barriers between disciplines, and wide ranging interests that converge on conscious evolution.

What is a Terran? Nationalism and Planetism

Exopsychology is concerned with, among other things, helping to establish a planetary identity, a recognition of the planetary commons that we all share. Rather than fight against discrimination, our approach is to cultivate our commonalities, so that we can better appreciate and embrace our differences. Although we speak of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, that is only to reflect upon a very Terran concern: how can we survive the massive, convergent changes that are now upon us?

The stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, and about our place in the Universe, will inform our decisions, values, and actions. Below is a short piece I found about what it means to be a Canadian. Is it possible that the Canadian reality foreshadows a global future? I know that not all is idyllic in Canada, and that Canada also exports armaments and has a range of problems…yet, I am still glad to be a Canadian. Paradoxically, I am not at all in favour of nationalism.

The paradox is resolved when we consider the definition below, and recognise that the reality of multicultural Canada, at its best, is in fact a step towards global unity. I am a planetist, identifying with Earth, Terra, or Gaia or whatever we end up calling ourselves. I am not the only one: Wikipedia has an entry on flags proposed for Planet Earth. Maybe someday in the distant future, such identification with a planet home-world will be considered backward and divisive, fomenting interplanetary conflict. But for now, it is a step in the right direction.

So, here is the article referred to above:

An Australian Definition of a Canadian

In case anyone asks you who a Canadian is. . . You probably missed it in the local news, but there was a report that someone in Pakistan had advertised in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed a Canadian - any Canadian.

An Australian dentist wrote the following editorial to help define what a Canadian is, so they would know one when they found one.

A Canadian can be English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. A Canadian can be Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, Arab, Pakistani, or Afghan.

A Canadian may also be a Cree, Métis, Mohawk, Blackfoot, Sioux, or one of the many other tribes known as native Canadians. A Canadian’s religious beliefs range from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, or none. In fact, there are more Muslims in Canada than in Afghanistan . The key difference is that in Canada they are free to worship as each of them chooses. Whether they have a religion or no religion, each Canadian ultimately answers only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

A Canadian lives in one of the most prosperous lands in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which recognize the right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

A Canadian is generous and Canadians have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return. Canadians welcome the best of everything, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services, and the best minds.

But they also welcome the least - the oppressed, the outcast, and the rejected. These are the people who built Canada .

You can try to kill a Canadian if you must as other bloodthirsty tyrants in the world have tried but in doing so you could just be killing a relative or a neighbour. This is because Canadians are not a particular people from a particular place.

They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, can be a Canadian. ‘Keep your stick on the ice’
